Alopecia Areata happens when your immune system attacks your hair follicles, causing varying degrees of hair loss. Alopecia usually starts with one or more small, round, smooth bald patches on your head, and can eventually cause complete hair loss on your scalp or even on your entire body.
This disease usually begins in childhood and affects both genders equally. Approximately 2 percent of the population, including more than 5 million people in the United States, has alopecia areata. As of now there is no permanent cure for alopecia. Its very unpredictable disease, although many researchers are working on its treatment.
Alopecia Areata Causes:
There are many causes associated with hair loss – some temporary (stress and pregnancy and some permanent (alopecia and spot baldness).
For some causes, such as stress and
fungal infections, the reversal of its effects can be quite easy to achieve.
This typically involves the removal or direct treatment of the trigger by using
oral cream or application.
For others, such as MPB (Male
pattern Baldness) and alopecia areata, reversal is possible but not quite so
easy. While treatment of the trigger can help, complete reversal may require a
more aggressive approach by treating all the possible triggers.
